Obituary for Osypa "Josephine" Morhardt

Tuesday, February 14 was a very sad day for our family. Ospya (Josephine) Morhardt, affectionately known to us as Bunica, left us to embark on her next journey. Osypa lived to the remarkable age of 103 years and was vibrant and a joy to be with to the end. Her intelligence, humor and warmth live on for all of us and the memories she has left us are priceless.
We will miss Bunica tremendously. She leaves behind her daughter, Irene and her son-in-law, Stefan who she loved like a son; her grandchildren, Anna, Sebastian and Fabian and their partners; and her sister’s family in Romania. Osypa was predeceased by her husband, Anton; parents, Anton and Maria; and her siblings, Anna and Walter.
Osypa was a very accomplished lady with many careers during her lifetime. Because of her fluency in five languages, she was an interpreter during the war. As a professional seamstress, she had a very successful home-based business. Later, she shared her sewing talents and supervisory skills at high end stores in Edmonton. Osypa’s next career was as a librarian and tour guide at the Ukrainian Canadian Archives and Museum of Alberta where she worked until she was 80. Her first job in Canada as a server at the Puritan Restaurant was by far her favorite because of her love of meeting and feeding people.
Osypa loved her Ukrainian heritage and her Catholic faith deeply. She was an active member of the Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada. She also participated in the Edmonton Ukrainian Book Lovers’ Club where she had the opportunity to read and discuss good books but also share her culinary expertise by feeding the group when it was her turn to host. Another of Osypa’s great joys was Ukrainian music. She sang in St. Josaphat Cathedral choir and was a dedicated parishioner for many years. Osypa also wholeheartedly followed the musical endeavors of her husband and daughter.
So many people have supported and loved Bunica over the years for which we are very sincerely grateful. We would particularly like to thank the staff at Devonshire Care Centre who have given Bunica much affection and exceptional care in her last few years.
We invite you to join us in a celebration of our dear Bunica’s life.
Divine Liturgy Wednesday, February 22 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 10825-97 Street. Cathedral Clergy officiating with interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Osypa’s memory can be made to the Ukrainian Women’s Organization of Canada, 10629 - 98 Street, Edmonton, AB T5H 2N6 or to St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 10825 - 97 Street, Edmonton, AB T5H 2M4.
